Empty Munchin’ January 6, 2006

The more I think about it, the more annoyed I become at the end shot in Munich. Overall, I enjoyed the movie (the suckerdom for spy stuff and things 70s being the main reason), but towards the end I got tired of obvious Tony Kushnerisms, the “main character turns into joke from beginning” thing (the closet?? too obvious), the blatant attempts to show an explicit connection between the terrorists and the Mossad (um, post hoc ergo propter hoc anybody?). But then, the ending. The final shot, well, that just reeked of blatant, exploitative filmmaking. I can ignore the prior three complaints because in the context of the film, they pretty much made sense. But the last shot completely lost me.

It’s probably a little hopeful, however, to expect more from Spielberg. He’s a good filmmaker, but I can’t jive with him being called a “great” filmmaker. Its parting shots like the one in Munich that are illustrative of his inability to end any of his serious films without getting super-explicitly preachy, and poisoning otherwise good films with a dash of vapidity.

That said, I can’t help but be excited for one of Spielberg’s upcoming projectsUniversal greeting!
