Brushes with Fame July 13, 2008

As much as Bombay is like New York, it’s also like LA — the epicenter of India’s economy and its entertainment industry. So it’s no surprise that we had the first family of Bollywood — Amitabh, Jaya, Abhishek, and Aishwarya — come by the office Friday for visas. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any of them. But my wife did, and says that Aishwarya (AKA “Ash”) has “the most amazing skin.” I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see them (ok, her… and maybe “Big B”), but I did get a chance to see Preity Zinta a little later the same day (and I think she’s actually prettier without makeup, but that’s just me).

More amusing was the probable brush with fame I had yesterday morning at the gym. There was a rather well-built and tall gentleman being catered to by three trainers next to me. At first I thought he was just some handsome rich dude — rich folk being a dime a dozen in our neighborhood — and went back to ignoring him. But then I noticed the hushed whispers around the guy, and finally the woman that went up to him and asked him to talk to her daughter on the phone. A celebrity! I realized. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. He had the Bollywood looks and the extremely expensive western workout gear, as well as some handlers sitting around in the lobby.

The problem is that I still have no idea who that dude was. And it’s like that with about 99% of the Bollywood folks out here. I wouldn’t recognize most of them if they bumped into me, even though they are easily the most famous people in India. This presents issues, as they stop by the office frequently, and live in our neighborhood or nearby.  So I guess I’m going to have to start reading the society pages more frequently. Otherwise I won’t know when to kowtow and when not to.
